Server Load -- A Few Facts
Basically, server load is a simple number which starts from 0.00. The server load tells us that how many processes are waiting to access the processor in a certain period of time. The smaller the number, the better it is. If the number is high,it may denote that the performance of the server may be decreasing. Server load is an instantly calculated value which can be seen in the control panel of your web hosting account. Upon refreshing the page, the value changes almost everytime. There is a debate about how to interpret the server load value. But one thing is sure -- a value of 0.00 is considered to be safe and as long as it remains under 1.00 you need not worry about the performance of your server. But if the value becomes more than 1.00 then you should be careful. The general rule is that the value should not be more than 1.00 per CPU(central processing unit). So,if the server has two CPUs,the value should not be more than 2.00 and so on. However one should keep in mind that these are only average values. Sometimes all servers are required to bear extra load temporarily for various reasons. With the powerful modern processors of today, even a single processor may bear a server load of 2.00. We must remember that all processes are not the same. When a process is of low priority and a server request comes up,it will be handled immediately and the low priority process has to wait. Actually we have to watch the real life behavior -- if the pages are loading fast,if a process (such as searching through a database) does not take more than reasonable time, then the system is probably OK,whatever be the server load. Server load is also influenced by many other factors like memory usage,CPU usage etc. If the server has low internal memory, then it will increase CPU usage and will result in more server load which will make the server respond to requests slowly. In this case more internal memory (RAM) has to be added. It will lower the server load. So we can see that server load is a number which is affected by many factors. What we have to see is how the server behaves. If the server is fast then the number(server load) does not mean much. |
